Ghost Stories at My Aunt's House

My grandmother and I both went down to visit my aunt's. Before departure, I mentioned to my grandmother that maybe we'd see a ghost! I'm not so sure how my grandmother feels about the existence of ghosts, but she does not like to talk about them.

That evening, I had a big slice of chocolate cake, and we all watched some Celebrity Ghost Stories and Dead Files by the fire. As it was time for bed, one of their cats followed me until I tucked myself in. What a lovely host, that cat was! The rain outside beat down on the roof with thunder in the distance. I was sleeping in the "haunted room" yet again, but I slept like the dead this time. It was cold, so I slept with socks on. When I woke up, a sock was missing! I looked under the covers, but I was unable to locate it. My cousin finally found it all the way under the bed. My uncle half-joked that it was "the girls" that took my sock. The girls to whom he was referring are the ghosts who are said to haunt the home. (I frequently lose socks during my sleep, so I wasn't too perturbed.)
from The Woman in Black

I've heard a couple different stories out of that house. I'm not a historian, so these accounts may not be completely accurate. The first tale is concerning a fire. There were two girls living in the house at the time who tragically perished. When my relatives moved into the home, my cousin was very young. She decided to draw a picture of their new home...with flames coming out the windows. They've since reported hearing running and giggling, having hair pulled, and having some of their doors opening and closing. They say they've even seen the ghosts at times. There's another story about a young lady who suffered from epilepsy. The lady was taking a bath when she had a seizure and tragically drowned. These three girls, they say, still walk the halls of that house, spying on (and sometimes touching) visitors.

Upon waking, we all had pork tenderloin biscuits. My grandmother was somewhat quiet throughout the morning. We talked a little bit later about the previous night, and she mentioned seeing a little girl and a lady standing in her doorway. She was able to look at them, but they seemed to fade away. My grandmother kept trying to talk herself out of what she had seen. She said she since was able to go back to sleep, so it clearly was not a ghost. Then she said it was the patterned wallpaper that she mistook for "the girls." Whatever it was that she saw, we will never know. Regardless, I believe my grandmother is afraid of the possibility of ghosts.

  1. How fascinating! I think I would be too scared to live in a haunted house, but it would probably depend on whether they were friendly ghosts or nasty ones. I don't think I'd mind friendly ones.

    1. Friendly or not, it must still be unnerving to know something else is watching.

  2. If I was your grandma, I'd have been pretty creeped out, too. And I agree with you, it wouldn't matter if they were friendly or not - still creepy. :o)

  3. P.S. I showed the spouse the picture of your aunt's house and he said, “Is that for sale?” LOL!

    1. It's a beautiful house, but I don't know if they'll ever sell. They'll probably end up haunting the house themselves one day!

Odd Ghoul Out's 2019 Concert Clip Show

It's been a decade since I first got into goth music and subculture. And, with my tongue firmly stuck to my cheek, I observe how I am  still  a baby bat! I'm young enough to still be called a "baby" at shows and club nights yet old enough to recall, with deep nostalgia, vying for a spot directly in front of the stage at my first Peter Murphy show nearly 10 years ago at a now-relocated venue in Atlanta... I also remember with fondness—and some embarrassment—writing a cliché poem for Peter Murphy, referring to him as the "original Bat." And, instead of keeping it to myself, I actually threw the typed poem up onto the stage directly following the show, hoping he'd pick it up and keep it in his breast pocket. Ah, the folly of youth! I don't recall there ever being this many bands of the goth or goth-adjacent persuasion playing in Atlanta since I got into the subculture. That's not to say there weren't plenty of bands playing this city. I only f...

Let's talk Goth, Consumerism and #zerowaste

Disclaimer:   I do not claim to be an expert on low waste (or "zero waste") living —far from it . The purpose of this piece is to explore what it means to belong to the Goth subculture in the context of consumerism and making sustainable choices. There are many ways to live sustainably, but this piece will focus on reducing waste. This piece does not seek to shame or blame anyone but rather to challenge throw-away attitudes that dominate our world—and the modern Goth subculture—by offering another perspective. Respectful discussion in the comment section is welcomed.  W hen I hear the words "zero waste," I often think of people making videos to show off three months of trash fitting inside a little mason jar, their magical Whole Foods shopping trip, or even a tour of their impossibly-tiny capsule wardrobe. Search #zerowaste on Pinterest and you'll come up with pictures of tidy little beige pantries with uniform mason jars filled with chia seeds, nutri...

Ten Things of 2018

For the majority of the past ten years, I've wanted to say "good riddance" to that current year and hope for a better coming year. But even though this year did bring loss, change and sadness, it also brought me great joy. I've felt a deep sense of gratitude for this year. Here are ten big things that happened in 2018: I settled in to my job and house. Ryan and I started planning our wedding. Ryan's youngest brother was diagnosed with glioblastoma. He passed away in April.  I competed in a charity dance competition with a Waltz routine. We got married on July 21st in Thomas, WV (where I did my AmeriCorps service).  Reader, I married him. We had a "mini-moon" in Asheville, NC. I didn't have enough time off work for us to have a "real" honeymoon. We'll be planning a honeymoon for 2019.  Ryan's brother got married in September. Ryan's cousin got married in September as well. (2018 will be the Year of Weddings.) I...
