Prom 2012

Right now, I am having a difficult time typing this because of my enormous black claws that I glued on yesterday. Last night was Prom. It took so long for me to get ready, but most of that time was devoted to my hair. I did Siouxsie inspired makeup and rockabilly inspired hair. What a combo. After having finished everything, I hopped in the car and drove over to Prom, which was held at Fernbank Museum of Natural History. If you don't know Fernbank, it's a wonderful place for science lovers where two huge dinosaur skeletons were the backdrop to Prom.

If you have been to Prom, you probably know that is is overrated. It's a lot of sweaty teenagers dancing to top forty remixes with some good food. If you aren't determined to have fun and get your money's worth, then you won't. Jean and I met up last night. We weren't having too much fun. We both decided that we were going to dance obnoxiously, so I'm sure we pissed off some people in the process. Then we got bored, and found  a wheelchair. Yes, you read correctly. For a good bit of the night, I wheeled Jean around. We wheelchair danced and drove in circles. People were taking pictures with him the whole night; I didn't realize how popular he was. I was a little disappointed that the DJ didn't play a couple of our suggested songs...until I started to hear Friday I'm in Love by The Cure. It just isn't prom without The Cure. Jean, Claire, Nathan, and I all ran to the dance floor. Luckily for us, the lame student body started clearing as soon as the song started playing. We danced to The Cure and The Smiths. I actually had a good time at Prom. :)
After Prom, Jean and I went to a Diner for Milkshakes. By coincidence, we ran into one of his acquaintances who invited us to a party. I was a bit weary of going, because I get uncomfortable around large groups of people I don't know. I sucked it up, and we went anyway. It turned out to be a party almost  exclusively for Hipsters. It was certainly an experience. I had an okay time. I talked to some people about literature, so that's something. There were so many mustaches, cut-off shorts, and thick-rimmed glasses for just one place. ;)
After that, I came home and got ready for bed. I didn't realize it would take almost as much time to take my hair down as it did to put it up. I woke up disappointingly late this morning, and I have a slight headache (no, not a hangover). I guess Prom just isn't good unless it ends in a headache.

Goodwill's Bad Reputation

In recent news, I was appalled to find that my favorite source to buy clothing has developed a bad reputation for paying disabled workers under minimum wage. According to NBC News, Some disabled workers in Pennsylvania were payed as low as 22 cents per hour in 2011. Thanks to a legal loophole, this is not technically a violation of any labor standard. Source Goodwill Industries is a company that prides itself on providing opportunities to " enhance the dignity and quality of life of individuals and families by strengthening communities, eliminating barriers to opportunity, and helping people in need reach their full potential through learning and the power of work." One of the main reasons why I had always shopped at Goodwill, besides the variety of clothing at bargain prices, is that I believed each purchase would help serve my community. Goodwill claims to treat workers with respect and dignity while achieving high ethical standards. In reality, I found Goodwill i...

Let's talk Goth, Consumerism and #zerowaste

Disclaimer:   I do not claim to be an expert on low waste (or "zero waste") living —far from it . The purpose of this piece is to explore what it means to belong to the Goth subculture in the context of consumerism and making sustainable choices. There are many ways to live sustainably, but this piece will focus on reducing waste. This piece does not seek to shame or blame anyone but rather to challenge throw-away attitudes that dominate our world—and the modern Goth subculture—by offering another perspective. Respectful discussion in the comment section is welcomed.  W hen I hear the words "zero waste," I often think of people making videos to show off three months of trash fitting inside a little mason jar, their magical Whole Foods shopping trip, or even a tour of their impossibly-tiny capsule wardrobe. Search #zerowaste on Pinterest and you'll come up with pictures of tidy little beige pantries with uniform mason jars filled with chia seeds, nutri...

My Aunt's Victorian House

I spent this weekend at my Aunt's house. I figured since I had a school assignment at an observatory near her house, that I'd spend the night while I was out there. She lives in a lovely Victorian house that is filled with antiques and Halloween decorations. They even say it's haunted. (They had me sleep in the "haunted" room, but I didn't see any ghosts. :/). I took some pictures of the house while I was there. Below, is just a portion of the Halloween decorations they keep. Around Halloween time, they go all out to decorate. I'm not kidding. My Aunt was even born on Halloween, and she's the one who really fueled my love of spooky things during my childhood.  This is an antique baby carriage they keep in front of my cousin's room.  This table is in the front parlor. I thought it was beautiful, and the witchy sign is a nice touch. This beauty is probably my favorite thing in the house. It was an antique organ that came from a ve...
