My brother's spending his last days in Georgia since he's leaving for Thailand very soon. We went for pho at lunch in Atlanta. After that, we visited my favorite cemetery in the area, Oakland.

My handsome brother. Taken at Dua Pho in Atlanta. |
Oakland is a very unique cemetery. This is where the elite of Atlanta (including Margaret Mitchell, author of Gone With The Wind) are buried, so tombs and gravestones are very elaborate. The cemetery is very well taken care of, and the landscaping is fantastic. With all the varied plant life, it's like a cemetery garden. This place even has it's very own
gift shop,
guided tours, and special events (
Tunes from the Tombs, a music festival, and
Run Like Hell 5k).

I have no idea...but I like it. |
I hope everyone gets the chance to visit this lovely place.
Until then, here's "Because I Could Not Stop for Death" by Emily Dickinson.
Because I could not stop for Death –
He kindly stopped for me –
The Carriage held but just Ourselves –
And Immortality.
We slowly drove – He knew no haste
And I had put away
My labor and my leisure too,
For His Civility –
We passed the School, where Children strove
At Recess – in the Ring –
We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain –
We passed the Setting Sun –
Or rather – He passed us –
The Dews drew quivering and chill –
For only Gossamer, my Gown –
My Tippet – only Tulle –
We paused before a House that seemed
A Swelling of the Ground –
The Roof was scarcely visible –
The Cornice – in the Ground –
Since then – 'tis Centuries – and yet
Feels shorter than the Day
I first surmised the Horses' Heads
Were toward Eternity –

What a beautiful cemetery! I love the ones with pretty architecture.
ReplyDeleteIndeed it is beautiful. It's a sanctuary in the middle of a big city. :)
